NBA Odds: Lin, Knicks Host Hornets to Tip Off the Weekend

Point guard Jeremy Lin and the New York Knicks will get back in action on Friday night as they play host to the lowly New Orleans Hornets at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks will be trying to run their winning streak against the Hornets to seven games, having picked up six straight victories over them since 2009. New York has also managed to cover the spread in seven straight against the Hornets.

Overall the Knicks are 6-4 straight up and 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 meetings with the Hornets, with the OVER/UNDER going 4-6 in those 10 contests.

And with the Linsanity in full swing the Knicks are getting a little more attention on the NBA futureslists right now; New York sat at 18/1 at Bovada at last update to win the NBA championship this season, and at 10/1 to claim the Eastern Conference crown.

The Hornets, by far the worst team in the Western Conference, are off those boards.

In their last game on Wednesday night the Knicks beat the Sacramento Kings 100-85 at home, getting 15 points and 10 rebounds from Landry Fields. Lin was held to 10 points in that win, but also picked up a career-best 13 assists.

In Lin’s previous game on Tuesday in Toronto he hit the game-winning shot as time expired and put up 27 points and 11 assists. His hot stretch of starts began against the Jazz last Monday when he scored 28 points; Lin followed that up with quality games against the Wizards (23 points), Lakers (38 points), and Timberwolves (20 points).

NCAA Betting: VCU, Northern Iowa Get the National Spotlight

Virginia Commonwealth made it all the way to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament last season on a Cinderella run that saw them fall to Butler in the national semi-final. The Rams went 12-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association last season, and 28-12 overall.

This year VCU sits at 13-3 in conference play and 22-6 overall heading into Friday’s matchup with Northern Iowa, and they’re 14-12-1 against the spread. However, they had their 11-game winning streak stopped in their last game on Tuesday night, falling 62-61 on the road against George Mason.

Bradford Burgess and Troy Daniels each scored 13 points for the Rams in that loss, with Daniels also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Darius Theus picked up 11 points and six assists in that contest for Virginia Commonwealth.

Before Tuesday the Rams hadn’t lost since falling in back-to-back games to Georgia State and Drexel in early January. VCU’s other defeats this season came at the hands of Seton Hall, Georgia Tech, and Alabama back in November.

The Panthers have struggled in the Missouri Valley Conference this season, although they do have a win over a ranked team on their resume this year – they knocked off then-No. 13 Creighton by a score of 65-62 at home on February 4.

None of VCU’s wins this year have come against ranked teams; the only time they took on a team in the AP Top 25 was when they fell 72-64 on the road against then-No. 13 Alabama back in November.

The undefeated Cloud (22-0) will be coming off an impressive TKO win over Yusaf Mack which saw him throw punches at a blistering pace for over seven rounds. The most dangerous thing in this fight could be Cloud himself if he can’t find the motivation to fight another questionable title contender who is below his class. If he is focused on the task at hand it should be another day at the office for the IBF Light Heavyweight champ.

Campillo will be coming off a disappointing re-match draw with Karo Murat and boasts a record of 2-1-1 in his last four fights. His best chance of winning against Cloud will consist of keeping his distance and landing straight punches. He will need to make Cloud feel his punches and respect his power early on if he hopes to walk out of the ring as the new IBF Light Heavyweight champ.

Cloud will need to do what he does best and make the fight a close-quarter battle. If he’s able to get up in Campillo’s face the way he’s done with most of his opponents thus far it should be an easy night for the champion, resulting in his fourth title defense and putting him a step closer to a fight with Bernard Hopkins, Jean Pascal, or Chad Dawson.

The Bud Shootout is NASCAR’s annual kickoff event, giving the series’ drivers a tuneup for the following weekend’s Daytona 500. No standings points are awarded for the Bud Shootout, just cash and the prestige that goes along with beating the rest of the field.

Harvick opened as the 9/1 favorite at Bovada to win the Bud Shootout on Saturday night; even though he finished back in seventh place in the 75-lap race last season, he was the champion at the event in both 2009 and 2010.

If you like Kurt Busch’s chances of repeating as the Bud Shootout winner this weekend his odds are a little more lucrative – he’s at 14/1. That has him behind his brother Kyle Busch and each of Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, and Jeff Gordon, who are all at 10/1.

As well, Jimmie Johnson sits at 11/1 odds, and Tony Stewart is pegged at 12/1 odds.

Stewart, Gordon, and Earnhardt Jr. each have multiple Bud Shootout victories on their resumes; Stewart has three (2001, 2002, 2007), while Gordon (1994, 1997) and Earnhardt Jr. (2003, 2008) have two each.

Johnson won the Bud Shootout in 2005. Denny Hamlin, at 15/1 odds to win this year along withClint Bowyer, Kasey Kahne, and Brad Keselowski, won the event in 2006.

Jamie McMurray, who finished second to Kurt Busch at the race last season, is then at 18/1 odds, followed at 20/1 odds by Greg Biffle, Jeff Burton, and Matt Kenseth.

Ryan Newman, third last year at the Bud Shootout, is then grouped as one of the longshots in the 25-man field at 25/1 odds to drive away with the win on Saturday in a race that has two segments (25 laps, then 50 laps) and 187.5 total miles.

Paul Williams vs. Nobuhiro Ishida in Junior Middleweight Bout

Williams was once considered one of the top pound-for-pound boxers in the game with wins over big-name fighters and a WBO Welterweight title. A recent loss toSergio Martinez, however, and a controversial decision win against Erislandy Lara have dropped his star down from the lofty position it was in just a little over a year ago.

At the age of 30 is Williams past his prime, or will the results of his last two fights motivate him to return to the form we became accustomed to seeing from The Punisher? If he does return to form he should have an easy day with Ishida, who has fought few top-ranked opponents.

Ishida has spent most of his boxing career fighting in his native Japan. He suffered a split-decision loss to Rigoberto Alvarez in 2010, but since then he’s had impressive winning performances against James Kirkland and Edson Espinoza. Despite those performances he will still be an underdog when the two fighters step into the ring.

Keys to victory for Williams would include staying away from Ishida’s power and keeping the pressure on the Japanese fighter for as long as it takes to get the upper hand. For Ishida, he needs to stay in the fight long enough to test the questionable chin of Williams. One big shot could win it for Ishida; he just has to find the right spot to land it.

Harvick a Top Contender to Win 2012 Cup Title

Harvick tied Kyle Busch with four visits to Victory Lane in the Sprint Cup Series last season, and they were both just one win short of eventual championTony Stewart.

Harvick, though, only managed to finish in the Top 5 nine times in 2011, which was well down from his 16 Top-5 results from 2010. Harvick also had fewer Top-10 finishes in 2011, just 19 compared to the 26 he earned the previous season.

That caused the Richard Childress Racing driver to end up 58 points back of Stewart in the standings at the end of the season, and in third spot for the second year in a row.

On the current Sprint Cup Series championship futures at Bovada Harvick is listed fourth at 8/1 odds (along with Stewart) to win the 2012 title; he trails Jimmie Johnson (5/1), Carl Edwards (6/1), and Kyle Busch (7/1) on that list.

And Harvick is also in a pack of drivers at 12/1 to win the season-opening Daytona 500 in two weeks. Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are the current favorites on those Bovada NASCAR odds at 10/1 to pick up that win at Daytona International Speedway.

Harvick had a Daytona 500 to forget last season, as engine trouble had him finish in 42nd place. Harvick’s four 2011 victories came at Auto Club in March, Martinsville in April, Charlotte in May, and Richmond in September.

And the Blue Devils will be full of confidence on Thursday after they edged bitter rival North Carolina 85-84 last Wednesday in Chapel Hill and then crushed Maryland 73-55 at home in their last game on Saturday.

Seth Curry led the Blue Devils with 19 points in that win over the Terrapins on Saturday, whileMason Plumlee was good for 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Miles Plumlee contributed 13 points and 22 boards.

That result improved Duke to 21-4 straight up and 11-14 against the spread on the season, and they’re now up to No. 5 in the rankings. North Carolina State sits at 18-7 straight up and 9-12 against the spread on the season heading into Thursday night.

The Wolfpack earned a win in Georgia Tech in their last game last Thursday, grabbing a 61-52 victory behind a 15-point performance from C.J. Williams. C.J. Leslie added 13 points and 10 rebounds for North Carolina State that night.

Duke won both of its games against North Carolina State last season, and they’re 8-2 straight up and 6-4 against the spread in the last 10 meetings between the schools dating back to 2005. The OVER/UNDER went 8-2 in those 10 contests.

Although the Blue Devils beat the Tar Heels last week, they still trail them on the NCAA Tournament futures right now; Duke is at 12/1 to win the national title, with North Carolina at 15/2. North Carolina State is a longshot at 300/1 odds on that futures list.

WBC Odds: Vitali Klitschko vs. Dereck Chisora for Heavyweight Title

One of the safest bets in the sport of boxing will be defending his WBC Heavyweight title this weekend and Bovada is the place to get your boxing odds on the big fight. Vitali Klitschkomakes his return to the ring following a 10th-round TKO over Tomasz Adameklast September, and this time he’s defending against the talented Dereck Chisora.

Klitschko has been the big stud ofboxing betting over the last nine years, winning 11 straight fights and defending his title seven straight times. Action on a champion this dominant doesn’t come at a cheap price, and against Chisora this weekend oddsmakers at Bovada have him handicapped as a -1400 favorite.

As usual with Klitschko it comes down to whether or not you think time has caught up with him, and considering his last performance only a few months ago there’s little reason to think it has.

Only nine months ago Chisora looked like he was the future of the Heavyweight division, holding a 14-0 record and the BBBofC Heavyweight title. But two decision losses in late 2011 have left him 1-2 in his last three fights; somehow, though, he finds himself in a WBC title fight against Klitschko. The current Bovada upset line on Chisora is at +750.

Despite the ability to fight at an aggressive pace, and power in both hands, Chisora stands only six feet tall. Against Klitschko’s jab it’s tough to believe that a man of that height will be able to get close enough to the champ to have an impact on how the bout will play out.

But Chisora most certainly has a puncher’s chance, and at +750 that chance might be worth some meager action for a potential big payday.

Bovada Basketball Odds: Crimson Tide Look to End Losing Skid Against Gators

The Alabama Crimson Tide haven’t managed to beat the Florida Gators in four years, but they’ll get another chance on Tuesday night at home when those schools hit the hardwood at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa.

The Tide’s last win over the Gators came back in March 2008; since then they’ve managed to drop three straight games to Florida, only covering the posted spread at the sportsbook in one of those three outings.

Overall Florida is 8-2 straight up and 5-4-1 against the spread in their last 10 games against Alabama, with the OVER/UNDER going 6-3-1 in those 10 contests.

Last year Florida cruised to a 78-51 win at home over Alabama as a 6-point favorite on the college hoops betting lines at Bovada. Kenny Boynton had 14 points and six assists for the Gators that day, and Trevor Releford picked up 17 points for Alabama.

The Gators have lost two straight games heading into Tuesday’s matchup at Alabama, falling to both top-ranked Kentucky and Tennessee to sit at 19-6 straight up and 10-10 against the spread on the season.

Against Tennessee in their last game on Saturday the Gators fell 75-70 at home, losing reserve forward Will Yeguete to a head injury in the process. Boynton and Bradley Beal each scored 16 points for Florida in that defeat.

The Crimson Tide are 16-8 straight up and 9-11 against the spread after losing 67-58 on the road against LSU in their last game on Saturday. Rodney Cooper scored a game-high 28 points for Alabama that day, and Nick Jacobs picked up 14 points.

Nascar Betting: Edwards Seeks Cup Title After Falling Short in 2011

After suffering a heartbreaking finish in the driver standings in 2011 Carl Edwards will be looking to be just a tiny bit better in 2012 as the start of the Sprint Cup Series season rapidly approaches.

Edwards ended up tied with Tony Stewart atop the Sprint Cup Series driver standings in 2011, but Stewart got the Cup championship on a tiebreaker after winning five races during the season; Edwards only visited Victory Lane once.

And Edwards also finished second to Stewart in last year’s season-ending Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, which sealed his fate in the driver standings.

So what will Edwards’ approach be for 2012? Probably more of the same, and hope for a little more luck – and a couple extra checkered flags – along the way. No driver on the Sprint Cup Series circuit was more consistent than Edwards in 2011, as he led the way with both 19 Top-5 finishes and 26 Top-10 results.

Edwards also collected the most prize money last season, winning over $8.4 million in his 36 starts. His lone victory came at the Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March, although he also managed to win the annual All-Star Race.

The oddsmakers at Bovada also see value in the consistent Edwards for 2012 as he’s listed second at 6/1 odds to win the Sprint Cup Series championship this season – only Jimmie Johnson at 5/1 odds is ahead of him, with Stewart set back at 8/1 odds.

Edwards is also second on the Daytona 500 odds right now, with a line of 12/1 to win the season-opening race on February 26. Johnson leads the way on that list at 10/1, with Stewart and Dale Earnhardt Jr. two of the drivers sitting with Edwards at 12/1.
