Based On Past History, Spencer Is Overwhelming Favorite

The Oscars drop the curtain on award season for the film industry and you can get a good read on who is going to win the Academy over by the events that lead up to the biggest night in the business, which will be held this year at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on February 26th.

Best Supporting Actress is one of the honors that will be up for grabs next Sunday and there is a strong list of nominees featuring Berenice Bejo in The Artist, Melissa McCarthy in Bridesmaids, Janet McTeer in Albert Nobbs and Jessica Chastain in The Help, but they’re all chasing Chastain’s castmate, Octavia Spencer.

2012 Oscars – Will Octavia Spencer win Best Supporting Actress?
Yes -4000
No +1500

Spencer has been cast in a wide spectrum of films from Being John Malkovich to Big Momma’s Housebut it was her star turn as Minny Jackson in The Help that garnered the attention of the Academy as well as a host of others. Spencer has had a busy awards season, scooping up the honors at the BAFTAs, the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild awards, as well as being a part of ensemble-cast awards from the Hollywood Film Festival, Broadcast Films Critics Association and the Satellite Awards.

It would be a huge upset if Spencer were to walk away empty-handed at the Oscars after her outstanding wins at the rest of the major events, although Bejo has emerged as a possible dark horse and The Artist could be the darling of the show. Some entertainment experts are touting Chastain as a possible winner as well and if either of these women took home the Oscar, it wouldn’t be a massive upset as both played their roles incredibly well.

But the earlier award shows are usually a good harbinger of what the Academy is thinking, and Octavia Spencer is missing only an Oscar to cap an amazing season for her.

Asshole son trying to evict 98-year-old mom from her house

Mary Kantorowski, 98, is locked in a legal battle with her eldest son, Peter, 71, who wants to sell the house she’s lived in since 1953. “Mary has been living here happily paying all the expenses,” her court-appointed lawyer tells the Connecticut Post, “and now her son, Peter, comes along and is telling her, ‘Get the hell out,’ so he can sell it.”

In 1996, Mary gave a trust administered by Peter control of the house on the condition that she could live in it until she died. But after some legal maneuvering, Peter moved the house to another trust he controls in 2005, making him the owner. And in December Peter gave his mom an eviction notice, and soon after put the house—valued at $333,410—up for sale.

A probate court intervened, ruling that Peter had abused his mother’s power of attorney. Peter insists he’s only evicting Mary because he thinks she’d be better off in a nursing home “with people her own age.” But his younger brother is siding with his mom—and says Peter once told him their mother had lived too long.

Man buys $123 safe on e-Bay, finds $26,000 inside

When James Labrecque listed an old safe—to which he did not have the combination—on , the seller warned, “What you see is what you get, no returns, and no money back.”

A Tennessee man purchased it for $122.93, had a welder cut it open—and found $26,000 inside. The buyer shared the news with Labrecque via a positive review on the auction site, and Labrecque quickly attempted to convince the buyer to give him some of the cash, to no avail. In fact, WMC-TV reports, the buyer quoted Labrecque’s own eBay disclaimer right back to him when turning him down.

“I made a mistake, you know, that’s what it boils down to. And it cost me dearly,” says Labrecque, who adds that he shook the safe and didn’t think there was anything inside. “I feel like the stupidest idiot in the world. … I gave away a safe with $26,000 in it.” He also insists that if he were in the buyer’s place, he would have offered to split the cash 50/50 with the seller. “That’s a chunk of change, you know. That’s life-altering money.”

Obama raised a cool $29.1 million last month

President Obama is off to a good start in the fundraising department: He has raised a healthy $29.1 million for his campaign last month, bringing his total haul for this election to $250 million.

Some 98% of last month’s donations were of $250 or less, the campaign said. Nonpartisan analysts said donations of $200 or less made up 48% of Obama’s 2011 contributions, compared to 9% for Mitt Romney.

The president’s latest fundraising effort, a trip through California and Washington, was expected to bring in more than $8 million. Meanwhile, his approval numbers have been climbing amid glimmers of hope for the economy.

GOP rivals have been bogged down in their own contest, limiting their attacks on Obama, the AP notes. But it adds that he repeatedly tells supporters that the election is “not going to be easy because, first of all, I’m older and I’m grayer”—and it’s been “a tough three years” for Americans.

Chris Brown’s new pick up line needs work…

should hire someone to help him with his pickup lines.

The controversial singer, who went ape shit on Twitter this week, is back in the game. Chris is reportedly dating Vietnamese model Karrueche Tran, but that hasn’t stopped him from trying to get into other girl’s pants.

A woman has reported informed Us Weekly that Chris approached her at the Grammy Awards Gift Lounge with the pick-up line: “Can I get your number? I promise I won’t beat you!”

I know you all remember that Chris pleaded guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna, on the eve of the 2009 Grammy Awards. He was sentenced to probation and community service.

“He and his friends laughed, then one yelled, ‘That’s his new line!’”

Well, but, did it work?

“Ugh! I wanted to throw up!” she revealed.

Guess not.

’s Valentine’s Day was full of events.

The “Lollipop” singer reportedly proposed to his girlfriend, cocktail waitress Dhea, and he appears to have shared her answer via Twitter.

“She said yes!” the star cryptically tweeted on Wednesday.

Reps for the star are not commenting on the matter, but Media TakeOut  reports that Dhea is also expecting Wayne’s sixth child.

The 28-year-old emcee welcomed two sons in 2009; baby Neal with singer Nivea and Lennox with actress Lauren London. Another lover gave birth to Dwayne Carter III in 2008.

Last year, Wayne was reportedly proven to be the father of a child born after a one-night stand during the height of the “Go DJ” era.
He also has a daughter, Reginae, with his high school sweetheart, BET reality star Toya.

The couple ended their two year marriage in 2006.

Couple gets jail time for not getting treatment for cancer stricken son

The parents of an 8-year-old boy who died from Hodgkin lymphoma after suffering for months from undiagnosed swollen glands were sentenced to eight years in prison Thursday following their guilty pleas to denying him medical treatment.

Attorneys for Monica Hussing, 37, and William Robinson Sr., 40, had said the parents had financial problems and tried to get checkups for their son but couldn’t afford it.

The couple was given the maximum sentence by Cuyahoga County Judge Michael Astrab, who accepted their guilty pleas last month to attempted involuntary manslaughter in a last-minute plea deal before their trial was about to begin. They were handcuffed and taken into custody immediately. Both plan to appeal the sentence.

“I loved my son,” Robinson told the judge, occasionally wiping his eyes with a tissue. He said he was sorry. “I tried to help my son,” Hussing said as family members in the courtroom quietly sobbed.

Hussing’s sister, Shelia Slawinski, cried as she stood before the judge and gave voice to her nephew, Willie Robinson. “I told my sister,” Slawinski said. “I offered to help my sister.”

According to the prosecution’s pre-sentencing memo to the judge, at least eight family members noticed Willie’s deteriorating health over a period of more than two years and most spoke to the couple about it. One relative described the boy’s swollen neck glands as the size of a softball.

“Twenty-nine months he suffered,” Slawinski said. “Twenty-nine months they had to do something and they chose not to.”

Asked outside court why her sister hadn’t taken care of Willie and hadn’t enrolled him or three siblings in school, Slawinski said it was easier for Hussing to stay in bed during the day and do drugs. Both parents have abused drugs, their attorneys earlier told the judge.

Hussing’s oldest daughter, Lillian, 18, defended her mother in court and said Willie was able to do the same things other 8-year-olds do. “He was able to play, go outside,” she said.

The judge looked surprised and asked the teen if she would be willing to repeat her statements under oath and possible penalty of perjury. She did.

The judge compared the autopsy photo of Willie’s emaciated body to concentration camp victims. “If anybody, anybody, didn’t know this kid was sick, they are seriously, seriously disturbed,” Astrab said.

Plummer On Path To Historic Oscar Win

2012 Oscars – Will Christopher Plummer win Best Supporting Actor?
Yes -4000
No +1500

Plummer was first nominated for an Oscar two years ago in the Supporting Actor category for his work in The Last Station but the native of Toronto, Ontario certainly has to be considered the favorite for this year’s honor for his role in The Beginners, which stars Ewan McGregor and Melanie Laurent. He has essentially swept the Supporting Actor category throughout award season, picking up hardware from BAFTA, The Screen Actors Guild, the Golden Globes and from the Film Critics Associations chapters in Toronto, Los Angeles, Detroit and Indiana, among others.

Of course, Plummer will have to beat a solid list of actors, such as Kenneth Branagh (My Week With Marilyn), Jonah Hill (Moneyball), Nick Nolte (Warrior) and Max Von Sydow (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close), but one omission has certainly aided his chances on February 26th. Albert Brooks has earned rave reviews for his performance in Drive, but he was left out of the Oscars and many entertainment experts feel he would have been the one to stop Plummer.

However, Von Sydow has emerged as the darkhorse candidate to stop Plummer’s march to break Jessica Tandy’s record, which she set for the win in the Best Actress category for her work in Driving Miss Daisy in 1989. With his earlier wins and his main competition missing out on a chance to compete for the Oscar, it looks like a clear road for Plummer to become a part of Academy Award history.

Teen students shocked after their Facebook pics show up in porn site

Seventeen students from the Bay Path Technical Vocational Regional High School in Charlton, Ma., are shocked after finding out that their photos and personal information had been used on a porn website, the New England Cable News reports.

Although police documentation states that all the girls were fully clothed, the network reports the find is still “very unnerving” for the students.

According to the report, Dean of Students Mary Jane Rickson called in each of the girls to tell them what happened.

“This was probably one of the most uncomfortable conversations I’ve ever had to have,” Rickson told NECN. “Especially with telling some of the girls who didn’t know that they were on the actual website. They were very upset.”

WBZ-TV’s Christina Hager spoke to one of the victims, McKenna Daniels, who expressed her shock when she found out from a friend that her photo had been posted.

“The fact that someone could do that, I don’t understand why someone would do that to me,” the student told Hager.

Police told WCBV-TV that this case isn’t the only one in the region. Students, he said, should be wary of what they put online and practice security safeguards like changing passwords often and not accepting friend requests from people they don’t know.

Bristol Palin in begging through Craiglist for people to come to her book signings

A famous last name does not guarantee you fans, that’s the tough lesson has learned as she pleas for people to show up to her book signings.

Last week, in an ad posted on Craigslist, organizers offered free autographed copies of Palin’s recent book to the first 100 people who promised to attend a weekend signing in Washington, DC, the Post reports—noting that Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far got trashed by reviewers and failed to become popular after it was released last year.

The Post adds that even DC’s right-leaning Examiner called the Craigslist ad “an attempt to entice fans to attend the event.”
