This week on PGA Tour: Northern Trust Open

Oh, and Kyle Stanley is also playing – he leads the PGA Tour money list and early FedEx Cup standings.

Lefty is the +700 WagerWeb.com favorite to win this week off his incredibly impressive performance in the final round to win at Pebble Beach. Phil was bogey-free on Sunday to become the ninth member of the PGA Tour 40-win club. Mickelson is the all-time money leader at Riviera and a two-time winner (2008, 2009). Also second here in 2007.

Donald, the WagerWeb.com second favorite at +1400, missed two cuts last year in his breakthrough season, and one was in his season opener at Riviera. In all, however, he’s perfect for this track, where length is not the central tool. In five of his last seven starts here, has been T13 or better.

Dustin Johnson (+2000 at WagerWeb.com) held the 18-hole lead a week ago and finally appears healthy. Johnson missed the cut here last year but shared third in 2010 and 10th in 2009. Baddeley is +2500 to repeat. And he played well last week at Pebble with a fourth-place finish.

This week on European Tour: Avantha Masters

With many of the top Europeans headed for the United States and next week’s big WGC-Match Play event (or playing this week at the Northern Trust Open), it’s a big of a watered-down field for this week’s European Tour event, the Avantha Masters in New Delhi, India.

Defending tournament champion SSP Chowrasia, the only Indian to have won two European Tour titles in the last four years, is ready to add to that total and join Jeev Milkha Singh and Arjun Atwal as the only Indians to have won three titles on European Tour, when the Avantha Masters tees up on Thursday.

The field also includes former major champions Todd Hamilton and John Daly, as well as former world No. 1 amateur Peter Uihlein.

Chowrasia, 33,  triumphed by one shot over England’s Robert Coles last year to claim his second European Tour title following his victory in the Indian Masters in 2008, when he became the first player to win on his debut appearance as an affiliate member.

Both victories came in the Indian capital New Delhi, the first at Delhi Golf Club and last season at DLF Golf and Country Club, and he returns to the latter to defend his title in a confident mood.

“I’ve been practicing hard and I’m feeling really good,” said Chowrasia. “I’ve done a bit of work on my swing over the off-season and it’s paying off. I’m feeling very confident about my game.”

Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee (+2600 to win on WagerWeb.com) is targeting a return to his best form at the Avantha Masters after recovering from injury. The 42 year old’s last victory came on the Asian Tour in 2010, but in 2011 he was plagued by back problems and the closest he came to victory was at the Indonesian Masters, where he was second behind Lee Westwood. He is now nearing full fitness, however.

“I had a back injury after the Avantha Masters last year and that didn’t help my season,” he said. “But I’m confident this year will be a better year compared to 2011. My fitness level is about 85 to 90% now as I’ve been putting in more hours in the gym and that has helped.”

The most recent European Tour winner in the field is Dutchman Joost Luiten, who having knocked on the door a few times towards the end of 2011, eventually picked up his first title at the Iskandar Johor Open. Luiten is the +1400 favorite this week at WagerWeb.com.

Also in the field is 2010 winner Andrew Dodt, who made the Avantha Masters his maiden title when he birdied two of the last three holes in the final round to edge out Englishman Richard Finch by a single stroke.

This week on PGA Tour: AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am

The big news on the this week is that Tiger Woods makes his first start in the United States this year as the Tour heads back to California for the AT&T National Pro-Am. Place your PGA golf bets at WagerWeb.com.

Tiger will play in the AT&T for the first time since 2002 as he will look to win the title that he triumphed in back in 2000 – he has played here since 2002, that in the 2010 U.S. Open. Also in the field this week is three-time champion Phil Mickelson along with past winners Dustin Johnson, Vijay Singh and Davis Love III

Also in the field is Arron Oberholser, who has been injured and hasn’t played in this event since he won it back in 2006, another coming back from injury is Mike Weir. Making his first start of the year is Jim Furyk as the field will be playing on three of the best courses in golf, Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula. There is a 54-hole cut and the pros and amateurs finish at Pebble Beach.

Despite not having won an official worldwide event since November 2009, Tiger is the +500 favorite this week at WagerWeb.com. Tiger shared the 54-hole led two weeks ago in Abu Dhabi on the European Tour. But Tiger shot a final-round 72 that left him 2 strokes back of Robert Rock. Woods had just two fairways hit in the final round and only six greens in regulation. But his tie for third gives him a run of three consecutive top-3s in stroke-play events.

He has gone 26 tournaments dating to November 2009 without winning an official event. Woods will play the first round at Spyglass Hill on Thursday (10:01 a.m. local time), followed by Monterey Peninsula on Friday (9:17) and Pebble Beach on Saturday (8:22).

Of 21 par 72s in non-majors in 2011, Spyglass (+0.426) and Pebble Beach (+0.381) respectively ranked fourth- and fifth-most difficult even though both measure under 7,000 yards. Monterey Peninsula checked in at sixth-easiest of 14 par 70s in non-majors at 0.160 strokes under par.

Though he hasn’t done much so far this season, it’s hard to bet against Dustin Johnson, who is at +1900. He has two wins, a 7th and a 55th in four trips to this tournament. When the U.S. Open was held there in 2010, he blew a 3-shot lead on Sunday with an 11-over-par 82.

Hunter Mahan and Rickie Fowler are at +2000. Mahan comes off a missed cut in Qatar on Sunday. He shared sixth place at Torrey Pines two weeks ago. Runner-up here last year during which he carded a pair of bogey-free, 5-under 31s on the front nine at Pebble.

Phil Mickelson is at +2200 on WagerWeb.com. He’s yet to crack the top 25 in three starts this year. But he has three wins and four other top-10s in 16 career starts here.

Woods is the short chalk at 5/1 odds to win at historic Pebble Beach, where the former world No. 1 won the 100th United States Open by a remarkable 15 strokes back in 2000. Woods has shown plenty of signs of finally shaking off the last vestiges of a victory drought that saw him go two years without a win before he claimed the limited-field Chevron World Challenge in December, including a T3 finish at the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi Championship at the end of January.

It won’t be a day at the beach for Woods, however, with the likes of Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Hunter Mahan and Nick Watney all ready to tee it up at Pebble as strong contenders. Each of those four players are listed at 20/1 odds to chalk up a victory this weekend, with Mickelson owning three titles at Pebble Beach already, Johnson posting consecutive wins at this event in 2009 and 2010, and Mahan fresh off a runner-up finish behind D.A. Points in 2011.

Watney has recovered from an illness that forced him to withdraw last week form the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and the No. 13-ranked golfer in the world finished T6 behind Points last year after shooting a sizzling final-round 67. Points is back at Pebble Beach to defend his title, and is listed at 40/1 odds this time around.

This week on PGA Tour: Waste Management Phoenix Open

It’s weekend so that means the makes its annual stop in Scottsdale for the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the biggest “party” on the circuit every year. In fact, if you can only go see one tournament in person each year that isn’t a major, go sit at the 16th hole at this event. It’s quite rowdy!

This will be the 74th edition of the Phoenix Open, which started in 1932 at the TPC of Scottsdale, the site of the tournament since 1987. The first two years the tournament was played as the Arizona Open, then took its present name in 1935. The only older tournaments on the PGA Tour are the British Open (1860), U.S. Open (1895), Western Open (1899), Canadian Open (1904), PGA Championship (1916), Texas Open (1922) and the Nissan Open (1926), After seven years of having FBR as its sponsor, money problems prevented the company to continue its sponsorship and in 2009 Waste Management signed a six year sponsorship deal, thus allowing FBR to end its commitment a year early.

Tiger Woods isn’t in the field this week and most of the top Europeans are still overseas, but it’s a strong field. This week 15 of the Top-50 of the world rankings will play. Eight of them are from the Top-25: #6 Webb Simpson, #9 Dustin Johnson, #12 Matt Kuchar, #15 Brandt Snedeker, #16 Phil Mickelson, #21 Ian Poulter, #22 Bill Haas and #24 Bubba Watson. Next are the seven players between 26 and 50 in the rankings. Keegan Bradley, Bo Van Pelt, Martin Laird, Rickie Fowler, Jason Dufner, Mark Wilson and Aaron Baddeley.

Wilson, who already has won in 2012, is the defending champion, having beaten Jason Dufner in a Monday playoff last year. He is +2600 on WagerWeb.com PGA golf bets to repeat. After winning the Humana Challenge, there’s no reason to think he can’t contend in another shootout here.

The favorite is Simpson at +900. First start since a T38 at the Sony Open. Started the year with a T3 at Kapalua. Hasn’t gone consecutive starts without a top 10 since June. Had only one two-event stretch without a top 20 in all of 2011. Shared eighth place here last year.

The second-favorite is Scotland’s Martin Laird at +950. He opened 2012 with a solo second at Kapalua, then tied for 14th at the Humana where he hit 14 greens in regulation in every round. Shared third place at last year’s WMPO, playing his final 30 holes in bogey-free 12-under.

Brandt Snedeker, who won last week, and Matt Kuchar are next at +1100 on WagerWeb.com. And then there’s Phil Mickelson at +1500. He hasn’t played very well the past two weeks, missing the cut at Torrey Pines a week ago. But he has played this tournament, which is basically held in his backyard, a whopping 22 times and has won it twice.

Westwood Headlines Strong Field at Qatar Masters

Veteran Thomas Bjorn of Denmark returns to Doha, Qatar this week as the defending champion of the Commercialbank Qatar Masters, but world No. 3 Lee Westwood of England is the favorite on the golf odds at 9/1 to win this European Tour event at the windswept Doha Golf Club.

Westwood finished T17 last week at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, where he made his 2012 season debut by shooting a 6-under par total of 282 (72-72-68-70) to finish seven strokes behind winner Robert Rock of England at 13-under par.

Rock outdueled both Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy down the stretch on his way to victory, but with none of those three players in the field this week the top-ranked finishers at Abu Dhabi that will be competing in the Qatar Masters are Bjorn (22/1 odds) and Graeme McDowell (16/1). Both of those players finished T3 along with Woods last week at 11-under par.

Big-hitting Alvaro Quiros of Spain bombed out at Abu Dhabi, missing the cut at +6, but he won the Qatar Masters in 2009 and is listed at 16/1 odds to win a second title at Doha. Robert Karlsson of Sweden won this tournament title 2010 and is at 20/1.

World No. 4 Martin Kaymer of Germany also had a tough time last week, shooting rounds of 77 and 73 to miss the cut as well at +6. Nonetheless Kaymer is listed second behind Westwood at 12/1 odds to win the Qatar Masters.

Another talented Spaniard, Sergio Garcia, made his 2012 debut in more impressive fashion last week by shooting 8-under 280 to finish T12 at Abu Dhabi. Garcia is listed right behind Kaymer at 14/1 odds to win this week. Hunter Mahan is the top-rated American at 20/1 odds.

Could Torrey Pines Spark Mickelson Magic on Golf Lines?

Fan favorite Phil Mickelson headlines the field for this week’s PGA Tour event and he also sits atop the golf odds to win the Farmers Insurance Open which begins Thursday at fabled Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California.

The veteran left-hander with 39 career wins will be looking for his first victory since the Shell Houston Open in April of last year, and is listed at 14/1 odds to get the job done this week. Mickelson isn’t alone at that juicy chalk, however, as fellow American Nick Watney is also listed as the co-favorite this week at 14/1 odds.

Mickelson, who hails from the San Diego area, is a three-time winner of this event (which was called the Buick Invitational until 2010) but those victories came awhile back in 1993, 2000, and 2001. Last year he fell just short of winning his fourth title at the Farmers Insurance Open, finishing one stroke behind winner Bubba Watson who shot 16-under par (71-65-69-67).

Watson, another long-hitting left-hander, is listed back at 28/1 odds along with young hotshotRickie Fowler, who will be making his 2012 PGA Tour season debut this week at Torrey Pines. Watney, the 2009 champion, is scheduled to tee it up for the first two rounds with Mickelson andHunter Mahan in the marquee grouping to watch, with Mahan listed third on the betting odds at 18/1.

Brandt Snedeker (20/1), with three Top 10 career finishes at Torrey Pines, and 2010 winner Ben Crane (25/1) are also rated highly by the oddsmakers while powerful Dustin Johnson joins Watson and Fowler at 28/1. Johnson appears ready to go after a sore back forced him to withdraw last week from the Humana Challenge.

This week on the PGA Tour: Farmers Insurance Open

The pros head down to San Diego to play at historic Torrey Pines this week for the starting Thursday and played over the North and South courses. Yet the guy who has owned Torrey Pines more than anyone, Tiger Woods, isn’t in the field.

Tiger got a reported $1.7 million appearance fee and perhaps more to play in Abu Dhabi this week at the HSBC Championship. He has won seven times at Torrey Pines, tied for his most wins anywhere. Woods has started his PGA Tour season five times at Torrey Pines. He won four of those starts, with the lone exception coming last year, when he finished tied for 44th.

Since 1997, in his first start of the calendar year in a stroke-play event, Woods has won six of 15 starts. He’s finished in the top 10 every year except 2011. His scoring average in those events is a sparkling 69.1, and he’s a combined total of 201 under par. Tiger is the third-favorite on WagerWeb.com this week at +500 behind Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy to win in Abu Dhabi. He will make his PGA Tour season debut in two weeks at Pebble Beach.

At Torrey Pines, 16 of the world’s Top 50 are in the field, headlined by world No. 9 Dustin Johnson. But the biggest name is Phil Mickelson and he is the +900 second favorite on WagerWeb.com. Lefty has won three times at this event — in 1993, 2000 and 2001. He’s come close a number of other times, too — two second-place finishes (including last year) and 10 top-10 finishes in all. In 70 rounds at the event since 1993, Phil has carded scores below par 54 times.

Mickelson started slow last week, but was 9 under over his final two rounds at the Humana Challenge. This despite missing seven putts in Rounds 3 and 4 of 10 feet or less. At Torrey last year on the weekend, he missed only three such putts, and was 16-for-17 on Sunday.

Johnson (+2000) had to withdraw from the Humana last week with back soreness. Johnson finished tied for third here a year ago, three shots behind winner Bubba Watson. Johnson hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation Sunday last year en route to a bogey-free 66.

Ernie Els is in the field along with Hunter Mahan, Bill Haas, Keegan Bradley, Rickie Fowler, Brandt Snedeker and Geoff Ogilvy.

The favorite on WagerWeb.com is Nick Watney at +800. The 2009 champ has four top 10s in seven appearances here. This includes a T9 in 2010 and a T6 last year when he began his final round with birdies on eight of his first nine holes. Placed T12 at the Hyundai TOC three weeks ago.

Brandt Snedeker is behind Watney and Mickelson at +1000. In his first start of the year, shared eighth place at the Humana Challenge and finished fourth in putting. Three top 10s in five starts at the Farmers, including the last two.

Could Els surprise at +2100? He is making just his third appearance at this event. Els finished T6 in 2005 and T5 in 2010. Also making the long-distance journey from South Africa after losing in a playoff at the Volvo Golf Champions on Sunday. Ranked seventh in GIR on the PGA Tour in 2011.

Couples Opens as Chalk on Golf Odds at Mitsubishi Electric Championship

Four notable American names that have been familiar to golf fans for decades are sitting atop the golf betting odds for this week’s season-opening Champions Tour event, as the Mitsubishi Electric Championship gets set to tee off beginning Friday at the Hualalai Golf Course in Ka’upulehu-Kona, Hawaii.

Mark Calcavecchia and Tom Lehman are right behind Couples at 7/1 on the golf betting odds to win this weekend on the par-72, 7,053-yard stunningly beautiful seaside layout that was designed by Jack Nicklaus.

Calcavecchia, 51, earned his first Champions Tour win last season at the Boeing Classic and also won the Byron Nelson Award last year as the player with the lowest scoring average. Kenny Perry, 51, won his first Champions Tour tournament last season at the SAS Championship in October, while dividing his competitive schedule with PGA Tour events. Perry is at 10/1 odds to win the Mitsubishi Electric Championship this weekend.

Cook returns to the Hualalai as the defending champion after shooting back-to-back rounds of 64 to close out a two-stroke victory over Lehman at last year’s tournament. Cook offers significant value at 14/1 odds to repeat the feat this year, where he is listed alongside Russ Cochran and Bernhard Langer at those odds.

Golf Odds: South Africans Seek Advantage in South Africa

Native sons are expected to dominate the leaderboard this weekend in golf betting action on the European Tour, as the prestigious Volvo Golf Champions tournament commences Thursday on The Links at Fancourt in George, South Africa.

The Volvo Golf Champions is effectively the European Tour’s equivalent to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions on the PGA Tour, and it was held for the first time last year at The Royal Golf Club in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Paul Casey, currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, won the inaugural event in 2011.

South African major champion Louis Oosthuizen is listed as the strong 5/1 betting favorite to win the Volvo Golf Champions this time around, as it has been moved to the Gary Player-designed, par-73 course at Fancourt Country Club that plays to a length of 6,852 yards and is rated as the No. 1 course in South Africa.

Oosthuizen opened the 2012 season in impressive form last week with a win at the Africa Open, shooting all four rounds under 70 at the East London Golf Course including a second-round 62 to successfully defend his title at that event.

Fellow South Africans Charl Schwartzel and Retief Goosen are also ranked among the top contenders to win this weekend by the oddsmakers, with Schwartzel listed second behind Oosthuizen at 13/2 odds and Goosen following closely at 12/1 odds. Like Oosthuizen – who won the 2010 Open Championship – both players are also former major champions, with Schwartzel winning the Masters last year and Goosen earning a pair of U.S. Open crowns in 2001 and 2004.
