Australian Open men’s semifinals: Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal

The best rivalry in tennis for the past decade or so resumes in the semifinals of the when third-seeded and No. 2 seed meet for a spot in Sunday’s final. It’s the 27th time these two Hall of Famers will have met. Federer opened as the slight -115 tennis bets favorite on WagerWeb.com for Thursday night’s match in Melbourne.

Four-time Australian Open champion Federer advanced to his ninth straight semifinal at Melbourne Park with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 quarterfinal win Tuesday over Juan Martin del Potro, the man who beat him for the U.S. Open title in 2009. It was the 1,000th match in Federer’s pro career and he has yet to drop a set here in 2012. Nadal took 4 hours and 16 minutes to beat Tomas Berdych 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6), 6-4, 6-3, reach his 18th major semifinal.

Federer and Nadal – they were ranked 1-2 for many years – have been on opposite halves of the draw since the 2005 French Open. That was the last time the pair met in a Grand Slam semifinal, won that year by Nadal in four sets.

Nadal takes a 17-9 lifetime edge into Thursday’s match, including a 7-2 edge and a four-match winning streak in the majors. The last time Federer emerged victorious on the Grand Slam stage was the 2007 Wimbledon final, and it’s a trend he badly wants to reverse.

Nadal handed Federer two of his toughest losses, triumphing in arguably the greatest match of all time at Wimbledon in 2008 and repeating his five-set heroics at the ensuing Australian Open. Few thought Nadal had it in him in 2009, given he had contested a five-hour, 14 minute marathon against Fernando Verdasco in the semifinals two days before. Federer enjoyed an extra day of rest back then.

“We played a lot of matches against each other, in very important moments for our careers and very high moments,” said Nadal, a 10-time Grand Slam champion. “So the match is special.”

They played four times last year, with Nadal winning in the semifinals in Miami and Madrid and in the final of the French Open. But Federer stopped the streak emphatically when he dismantled Nadal, 6-3, 6-0, in the round-robin phase of the ATP World Tour Finals in November. Federer, not Nadal, has been on the much bigger roll of late. He has not lost since the semifinals of last year’s United States Open, winning his last 24 matches. His only blemish came when he retired before the semifinals in Doha with his back problems.

“Even if it’s not a final, it’s still a huge match,” Federer said.

The winner faces the - winner on Saturday night U.S. time.

Australian Open men’s semifinals: Andy Murray vs. Novak Djokovic

It won’t get the hype of the other men’s semifinal match, but top-seeded and No. 4 have their own history as they face off in Melbourne for a spot in Sunday’s final of the first Grand Slam event of the year. Djokovic, the reigning champion here, opened as the -120 tennis bets favorite on WagerWeb.com for Friday night’s match in Melbourne.

With Djokovic’s straight-sets win over David Ferrer and Murray’s sweep of Kei Nishikori, the semifinals will once again be all chalk. The Roger/Rafa/Novak/Andy foursome filled out the semifinals at both the French and U.S. Opens last season and three of the four advanced to the semis at Wimbledon and the Australian Open. Since the 2005 Australian Open, only one other player — Juan Martin del Potro at the 2009 U.S. Open — has won a Grand Slam.

This marks only the third time that the top four seeds have advanced to the semis at the Australian Open — it previously happened in 1988 and 2005. It was also the 14th time at all Grand Slams since the Open Era began in 1968.

Djokovic has been the best of the four in major tournaments of late, winning three of the four in 2011. He beat Murray in straight sets in last year’s Australian Open final. That victory launched Djokovic on one of the finest seasons in tennis history and sent Murray into a funk that lasted until the clay-court season in April. But Murray has embraced change this year, hiring a new coach in Ivan Lendl, while Djokovic has stuck by the same support team, headed by his longtime coach Marian Vajda.

The world No. 1 beat the Spaniard No. 5 seed David Ferrer 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 in his quarterfinal. Djokovic got past Ferrer in 2 hours, 44 minutes by hitting 17 more winners and breaking the Spaniard five times, compared to only two breaks for the loser.  It was far from plain sailing for the Serbian, who also appeared to struggle with a hamstring injury.

But he said: “I have no concerns of recovering for the next match.”

Murray, a the three-time Grand Slam runner-up handled 24th-seeded Nishikori 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 on Wednesday. The 24-year-old Scot struck 36 winners and won nearly 80 percent of his first- serve points, while Nishikori piled up 39 unforced errors.

Murray won the warm-up tournament in Brisbane and looks terrific under Lendl’s tutelage. Murray will meet Djokovic for the 11th time, with the Serb holding a 6-4 lifetime advantage. Their lone Grand Slam meeting came in last year’s final here, which Djokovic won easily, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Djokovic is 3-0 when they’ve met in semifinals of a tournament.

The winner of course faces the Nadal-Federer winner on Sunday (late Saturday in USA) in Melbourne.

Tennis Betting: Djokovic, Murray look to join Australian Open semifinals

and have advance to the semifinals of the first tennis Grand Slam of the season, the , and now top-seeded , the WagerWeb.com tournament tennis bets favorite, and No. 4 look to join Rafa and Federer when they take the court late tonight U.S. time Down Under.

Djokovic, the world No. 1 and defending champion, takes on fifth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain. Djokovic was pushed in his last match by Aussie Lleyton Hewitt. Up two sets and 3-0 in the third, the wheels came off. Djokovic was stretched to four sets and even had to fend off a break point in the infancy of the fourth when the score was tied. He finally put the banged-up Hewitt away 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.

Djokovic’s serve and forehand, in particular, tailed off. In the first two sets, he made a combined five forehand unforced errors. The number rose to 14 in the last two. His first-serve percentage fell in the middle of the third, and overall Djokovic was broken four times.

Djokovic’s next opponent, Ferrer, is similar to Hewitt: He hustles for every ball and is a fine returner. But at this juncture of their careers, he’s better than Hewitt. Mind you, Ferrer won’t be the overwhelming crowd favorite Wednesday, as “Rusty” was.

Ferrer topped Djokovic at the year-end championships in London in December, and even if the Serb was fatigued, Ferrer will take confidence from the 6-3, 6-1 victory indoors. That result allowed Ferrer, a semifinalist in Melbourne last year, to edge closer in their head to heads. He trails 6-5.

Murray, seeded fourth and looking for his third straight trip to the finals of this tournament, faces No. 24 seed Kei Nishikori of Japan. Nishikori’s defeat of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga moved him into his first grand slam quarter-final and also made him the first Japanese male to make it into the last eight at the Australian Open in 80 years. Before Nishikori, Shuzo Matsuoka was the only Japanese player to reach the latter stages of a Grand Slam event, when he made the 1995 Wimbledon quarterfinals.

Murray beat the 22-year-old Nishikori 6-0 6-3 in the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters in 2011 in the pair’s only previous match.

Murray, Djokovic Destined for Australian Open Run-In, Odds Makers Take Note

Fourth seed Andy Murray of Scotland easily dismissed his second-round opponent in tennis betting results at the Australian Open on Thursday, and remains on course for an eventual semi-final matchup with top seed and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the year’s first Grand Slam event.

Murray, who has lost in the final of the Australian Open in each of the past two years including a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Djokovic a year ago, cruised to a comfortable straight-set victory over Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France in a match that took less than two hours to complete. Murray also dispatched first-round opponent Ryan Harrison of the United States in a gruelling four-set battle earlier in the week.

Murray now moves on as a strong -2000 favorite on the tennis odds to defeat left-hander Michael Llodra (+800) of France in his third-round match, a player whom Murray has previously defeated twice already in his career.

Djokovic has looked very strong through his first two matches in Melbourne, dispatching second-round opponent Santiago Giraldo of Columbia in straight sets after blasting Paulo Lorenzi of Italy in the first round. The powerful Serbian has lost a total of eight games while winning his first six sets at the Australian Open, as he tries to claim his third Grand Slam title in a row.

Djokovic (-10000) will next face Nicolas Mahut (+1600) of France in the third round, and he remains the 11/10 chalk on the tennis betting futures to win the Australian Open. Murray is at 6/1 odds to win his first Grand Slam title.

Tennis Betting: Nadal, Federer Continue on Collision Course at Australian Open

It was a turbulent start in tennis bettingaction at the Australian Open for second seed Rafael Nadal, as the world’s No. 2-ranked player battled through a sore knee and tried to quell a brewing controversy over critical comments he was reported to have made about rival Roger Federer.

Nonetheless, the fiery Spaniard defeated Alex Kuznetsov of Russia in straight sets (6-4, 6-1, 6-1) to advance to the second round of play at the year’s first Grand Slam event in Melbourne. Nadal won the match despite having his right knee heavily taped and complaining of pain and a limited range of motion prior to the match.

Bet on the Austrlian Open today.

Nadal, who subsequently tried to downplay remarks he reportedly made on Sunday that were interpreted as being critical of Federer’s seeming reluctance to publicly support his fellow ATP Tour pros with regard to scheduling changes, will hit the court as a -3300 betting favorite for his second-round match against underdog Tommy Haas (+1000).

Federer, who quickly dismissed the notion that he might have any concerns about Nadal’s remarks, also won his first-round match in straight sets (7-5, 6-2, 6-2) with a dominating victory overAlexander Kudryavtsev of Russia. The Swiss legend, seeded third in the men’s draw, will faceAndreas Beck of Germany as a prohibitive favorite (-10000) to win his second-round match against the underdog Beck (+1600).

Nadal and Federer are on the same side of the men’s draw and appear destined to meet in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, presuming they maintain good health and are able to win all of their respective matches leading up to the final four. While Nadal is currently bothered by a sore right knee, Federer withdrew from the Qatar Open two weeks ago with a sore back.

Juan Martin del Potro (22/1 odds to win the Australian Open), Tomas Berdych (33/1) and Mardy Fish (125/1) and are among the top players on the same side of the draw as Nadal (13/2) and Federer (4/1) who could well threaten an upset as the tournament continues to unfold.

Tennis Betting: 2012 Australian Open Tennis Futures

Australian Open Futures Market: Who will win the 2012 Aussie Open

As the first Grand Slam of the year approaches, the all-consuming question of who will win the coveted trophy is making the rounds in tennis betting circles. Now, I’ll admit it is a bit premature to even contemplate answering this question at this point, seeing that the qualifying rounds aren’t even completed and the draw is yet to be released. So it’s a bit of a cart-before-horse situation. But if you’re a diehard fan, it’s simply too seductive to put off for any longer. I mean, it’s the first Grand Slam of the season. Besides, bookmakers have already gone to press with the futures odds. And I mean, since they are there, for all to bet on at will, why not give a little bit of a preview of the 2012 Australian Open with some early predictions and picks.

The Contenders in the Men’s Field:

Novak Djokovic     +135

it’s hardly surprising that Novak Djokovic leads the pack going into the 2012 Australian Open. The Serbian starlet started his unforgettable 2011 season by winning the Aussie Open after all. Moreover, he showed he was more than ready to defend his title Down Under when he beat Federer in 44 minutes at the pre-season exhibition event in Abu Dhabi, en route to the title.

Roger Federer     +275
By virtue of his 16-Grand Slam titles, Federer is always going to be considered a contender at a Grand Slam, even now after having crossed the 30-year-old mark. That said, Federer did withdraw from the first event of the season in Doha with a back injury and, although he insists he’ll be ready for a successful campaign Down Under, the question mark still hangs over his head.  The first week for Federer will be telling.

Rafael Nadal    +500

it’s rather surprising that Rafael Nadal is tipped so long ahead of the Australian Open. True, he’s admitted to a shoulder injury but, then again, Federer copped to a back injury and he’s listed much at much shorter odds.  Given this price tag, 10-time Grand Slam winner Nadal seems to be a value bet to good to skip.

Andy Murray     +500
Andy Murray has long been considered a contender and so he is again in the mix. He has yet to win a Grand Slam title, although he has been to three finals. There is no question that he has the quality and talent to win but his inexplicable failures make him an unpopular choice.

Best Long Shot Bets:
The best long shot bets in the men’s game have to be Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a former Aussie Open finalist, trading at +1500; and former US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro, who is listed at +1200

The Contenders in the Women’s Field

Petra Kvitova     +275
Last year’s Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova has to be one of the best bets in the women’s game to win the Australian Open this year. The Czech rising star epitomizes the power-playing style that has taken over the women’s game and she is the only emerging star who has proven to have the confidence to win the big titles. Especially promising for her run in Melbourne is that she is coming off a Year-end Tour winning title and a successful week at the Hopmans Cup last week.

Victoria Azarenka     +600
According to the bookmakers, Victoria Azarenka is a contender for the Australian Open title. The Belarusian has game, no question about it but to expect her to win a Grand Slam when she has yet to reach a final is a bit of a stretch.

Kim Clijsters     +600
Defending Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters is a huge question mark for the Australian Open, given that she spent most of the second half of 2011 on the sidelines with injuries.

Samantha Stosur     +800
US Open champion and home favourite Samantha Stosur is definitely a player to watch Down Under when the tournament gets underway next week. Stosur beat Serena Williams convincingly at Flushing Meadows to win her first-ever Grand Slam and that could provide dividends in Melbourne when she attempts to claim a second title before adoring home fans.

BEST Long shot bets:
The best long shot bet in the women’s game are French Open champion Li Na, also last year’s finalist in Melbourne, who is trading at a whopping +1500; Three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova at +1400; and World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki at +1000.

Novak Djokovic Expected to Repeat at Australian Open

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic began his record-setting 2011 season with his second career Australian Open championship. And to no surprise, Djokovic is the heavy 5/4 betting favorite at Bovada’s tennis betting odds to repeat in the Grand Slam tournament at Melbourne that begins on Monday Down Under (Sunday night USA time).

Get all your tennis odds at Bovada’s online sportsbook.

Djokovic started last season with a 41-match winning streak that wasn’t ended until the semifinals of the French Open – the only major Djokovic didn’t win. He would finish the year at 70-6 and in command of the world No. 1 ranking. In last year’s final Djokovic added to his 2008 crown with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 rout of Andy Murray. In between his 2008 and 2011 titles, Djokovic was ousted in the quarterfinals both years.

Roger Federer, the third seed, is the 7/2 second-favorite despite withdrawing from a warm-up tournament in Qatar with a back issue that he says won’t be a problem. The 16-time Grand Slam champion has won this tournament four times. His last title came in 2010, which was also the last Slam he won. In fact, he has only gotten past the semifinals once in Grand Slams since his 2010 Aussie win, that coming at last year’s French Open when he ended Djokovic’s winning streak.

Second-seeded Rafael Nadal, 13/2 to win, also is ailing (left shoulder) and plans to take time off after the Aussie Open. The Spanish lefty won this tournament in 2009, the only time he has reached the finals. Nadal was ousted in the quarters last year but then reached the finals of the other three majors, winning the French Open.

Scotland’s Murray is seeded fourth but is the third-favorite at 5/1 as he looks for his first Grand Slam title. Murray has lost in the championship match at Melbourne the past two years. He just won a warm-up tournament in Brisbane under new coach Ivan Lendl. No British man has won a Grand Slam event since 1936.

Petra Kvitova a Surprising Favorite to Win Australian Open

With the health issues of the formerly dominating Venus and Serena Williams, women’s tennis is as wide open as it has ever been and there are probably more than a dozen players who could win the Australian Open. The tennis season’s first Grand Slam event begins Monday (Sunday night USA time) in Melbourne.

Get all your tennis odds at Bovada’s online sportsbook.

Caroline Wozniacki is the No. 1 player in the world and the top seed for this tournament, but she’s only the sixth-favorite to win at 12/1 on Bovada’s tennis betting odds. Wozniacki seems to shrink from the moment in Grand Slams as she is the first No. 1 player in the world to have not won a major. She did reach the semifinals of two Grand Slams last year, including this tournament. Wozniacki has a minor wrist injury that required treatment during the deciding set of her quarterfinal loss at the Sydney International on Wednesday.

Because of Wozniacki’s defeat in Sydney, she could have lost the No. 1 ranking to Petra Kvitova if the Czech lefty had won that tournament, but Kvitova was beaten 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 by Li Na on Thursday in the semifinals. Still, Kvitova is the 5/2 betting favorite. The reigning Wimbledon champion and No. 2 seed has played the Australian Open only three times, with a best finish of the fourth round a year ago.

Serena Williams is the second-favorite to win at 7/2. Serena, who has been plagued by injuries for more than a year, pulled out of the Brisbane International last week after twisting her ankle while winning a second-round match. She will play but may not be 100 percent. Serena, seeded 13th, is a five-time champion of this tournament and has won the past two Aussie Open she played (missed last year). Sister Venus pulled out of this event earlier this week because of an autoimmune disease that can cause fatigue and joint pain.

No. 12 seed Kim Clijsters, the defending champion, and Victoria Azarenka are at 13/2. Clijsters also has health concerns, pulling out of a warm-up tournament with a hip injury. She missed the final two majors last year due to injury. Azarenka, the third seed, looks for her first Grand Slam final appearance.

Aussie Samantha Stosur, the sixth seed, is 10/1 to win the tournament in front of her countrymen. She is the reigning U.S. Open champion but has never advanced past the fourth round here. Li Na is 12/1 with Wozniacki. Li reached the Australian Open final last year two weeks after winning in Sydney. She did event better at the next major, winning the French Open to become the first player from China to win a Grand Slam singles title. But she was an early out at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

The other top seeds competing in Brisbane this week include No. 2 Gilles Simon of France, No. 3Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine, No. 4 Florian Mayer of Germany, and No. 5 Kei Nishikori of Japan.

Former champion Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, who won the inaugural Brisbane International tournament in 2009, as well as Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Bernard Tomic of Australia round out the top eight seeds at the ATP World Tour 250 event.

Simon, who is ranked No. 12 in the world and lost his first-round match at this tournament last year,  will open as a -500 favorite for his match against Ryan Sweeting (+333) of the United States.

Dolgopolov, who at 21 years old has already risen to No. 15 in the world singles rankings, won his first-round match on Sunday to advance to the second round with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Alejandro Falla of Columbia. Dolgopolov advanced to the Round of 16 in both 2010 and 2011 at this event.
