THE STORY:
Notre Dame and Villanova are heading in opposite directions of late, with the No. 25 Fighting Irish riding a seven-game winning streak and the Wildcats having dropped four of their last five. Villanova may have to play without leading scorer Maalik Wayns, who missed Wednesday’s loss at South Florida with a sprained MCL. The Wildcats sputtered offensively without Wayns, scoring a season-low 51 points – more than 20 below their season average.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPNU, ESPN3.com

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (18-8, 10-3 Big East): The Fighting Irish have found surprising success in league play by slowing the pace of the game – their 60.5 possessions per game in conference action are the fewest among Big East teams. Notre Dame has held six of its last seven opponents to less than 60 points, allowing 58.7 points during conference play. Junior forward Jack Cooley (11.9 points , 9.2 rebounds, 1.6 blocks) has posted three consecutive double-doubles, including a 22-point, 18-rebound effort against Rutgers on Wednesday.

ABOUT VILLANOVA (11-14, 4-9): The Wildcats had little trouble scoring before Wednesday, averaging a healthy 72.7 points, but they rank 15th in the league in points allowed (71.8) and in turnover margin (minus-2.2). Villanova has generated a great deal of its offense at the foul line, where it leads the Big East by a wide margin at 76.0 percent to make up for a league-worst field goal percentage of 41.5. Wayns (17.8 points, 4.5 assists, 90.2 percent free throws) has been the team’s driving force offensively, with junior forward Mouphtaou Yarou (11.1 points, 8.2 rebounds) providing some inside strength.

TIP-INS: CLICK HERE for 500 Handicappers Package FOR 5$

1. Villanova holds a slight 18-15 edge in the series, including 10-6 at home.

2. The Fighting Irish coasted to a 93-72 home victory in last season’s lone meeting with the Wildcats, but current Notre Dame players scored only 10 of the points.

3. The two teams have split their last 10 meetings, with each side sporting a 3-2 mark on its home floor during that stretch.

THE STORY:
No. 18 Marquette brings a five-game winning streak into Philadelphia when it faces  at noon Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center. The Golden Eagles’ only Big East losses have been to Syracuse and Georgetown. The Wildcats have turned around their worst start in league history and have won two of their last three – letting a halftime lead slip away in a road loss to Louisville last time out. Three of Marquette’s four losses have been on the road. The Golden Eagles edged the Wildcats 81-77 on Jan. 1, behind a balanced scoring effort led by Darius Johnson-Odom’s 24 points.

TV: Noon ET, ESPN2, ESPN3.com

ABOUT MARQUETTE (17-4, 6-2 Big East): The Golden Eagles are a well-rounded bunch, with a potent offense and stingy defense. Different players represent Marquette among the league’s top five in scoring (Johnson-Odom, 18.1), field-goal percentage (Davante Gardner, 58.1), assists (Junior Cadougan, 5.6) and steals (Jae Crowder, 2.3). The Golden Eagles’ 76.3 points are second only to Syracuse’s 78, and their 17.5 assists are most in the league. They also harass opponents, ranking fifth in overall field-goal percentage defense and 3-point percentage defense.

ABOUT VILLANOVA (10-11, 3-6 Big East): The Wildcats were outscored by 15 in the second half of Wednesday’s 84-74 defeat at Louisville, after leading 44-39 at the break. Leading scorer Maalik Wayns (18.7 points) continued his recent hot stretch with a team-high 19 points, and has averaged 27.8 over his last four games since a woeful three-point night versus Syracuse on Jan. 11. James Bell, who averages 7.6 points, has reached double figures the last three games, including his first career double-double of 14 points and 13 boards against the Cardinals.

TIP-INS:

1. Marquette coach Buzz Williams collected his 100th victory with a 67-47 triumph over South Florida on Tuesday.

2. The Golden Eagles went to the foul line 13 times more than Villanova in their first meeting, but hit just 23 for 37.

3. Wayns and second-leading scorer Dominic Cheek combined for 18 points on 6-for-23 shooting (1-for-8 3-pointers) in the Jan. 1 game.

Syracuse Villanova Betting: NCAA Basketball Prediction

Syracuse at Villanova
When: 7:00 PM ET, Wednesday, January 11, 2012
Where: The Pavilion, Villanova, Pennsylvania

THE STORY: While half of the top 10 stumbled, Syracuse held onto its No. 1 ranking for a fifth straight week and can match the school’s longest stay atop the polls this week if it remains unscathed. That includes tonight’s potential pitfall at Villanova, which has hovered around .500 but may be snapping out of its funk. The Orange remained one of three unbeatens in Division I, after building a huge lead and withstanding a rally by Marquette on Saturday. The Wildcats strayed from their usual perimeter game and enjoyed rare shooting success in thumping DePaul on Sunday.

TV: 7 p.m., ET, ESPN2, ESPN3.com

ABOUT SYRACUSE (17-0, 4-0 Big East): The Orange rely on a deep rotation to pace the league in scoring (80.6 points), scoring margin (20.5) and field-goal percentage (49.3). No player averages more than 30 minutes, but 10 see at least a dozen minutes of court time. Some of that’s due to blowouts, which the Orange appeared on their way to Saturday before Marquette whittled an 18-point halftime deficit to four in the 73-66 decision. Senior forward Kris Joseph, who scored a team-high 17 versus the Golden Eagles, logs the most minutes and guides the Orange at 14.1 points.

ABOUT VILLANOVA (8-8, 1-3 Big East): Rather than take a ton of 3-pointers, with efficiency that’s next-to-last in the league, the Wildcats played more aggressively in an 87-71 rout over the Blue Demons. Villanova went 4-for-10 from beyond the arc – half the attempts it averages – and 27-for-34 from the foul line, where its 76.3 percent accuracy leads the Big East. A season-best 56 percent field-goal shooting helped overcome 28 turnovers to DePaul’s pressure defense. Maalik Wayns leads in scoring (17.4) and assists (4.8), while Mouphtaou Yarou is tops in rebounding (7.8).

TIP-INS:

1. The Wildcats last hosted a No. 1 team in February 2006, when they defeated Connecticut.

2. Syracuse and Villanova split last season’s meetings, each prevailing on the other’s home court.

3. It’s the fourth true road test for the Orange, but the game is at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center rather than on campus. Click here to Place your College Basketball bets at Bovada Sportsbook

Villanova at Marquette Sports Betting: NCAA Basketball Gambling

Villanova at Marquette
When: 1:00 PM ET, Sunday, January 1, 2012
Where: Bradley Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

THE STORY:
Marquette coach Buzz Williams issued a challenge to his team after it was embarrassed at home by Vanderbilt in its non-conference finale Thursday. “Season one is over,” Williams said. “Season number two starts (soon). We can respond like champs or we can respond like chumps.” Williams hopes the latter isn’t the case Sunday afternoon when 13th-ranked Marquette hosts Villanova in its Big East opener. No matter the outcome, the Golden Eagles are sure to take a tumble in the rankings after being dismantled 74-57 by the Commodores. Each of the last five meetings with Villanova have been decided by five points or less. The Wildcats prevailed 75-70 at the Pavilion last season, and lead the series 11-7. The Golden Eagles are 4-0 in conference openers at the Bradley Center.

TV: ESPNU

ABOUT VILLANOVA (7-6, 0-1 Big East):
The Wildcats, who play five freshmen, have lost six of nine. Villanova was doomed by 15 turnovers and a 3-for-14 effort from beyond the arc in a 83-69 loss to West Virginia in its Big East opener Wednesday. Junior guards Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek each scored 20 points. Wayns (17.6 points, 5.3 assists) and Cheek (12.2 points, 4.8 rebounds) haven’t received much help offensively. Junior center Mouphtaou Yarou (12.9 points, 8.5 rebounds) is the only other player averaging double figures. The Wildcats are uncharacteristically bad from 3-point range (31 percent). Villanova, however, is 21st in the nation in rebounding (40.0).

ABOUT MARQUETTE (11-2, 0-0 Big East): The Golden Eagles have lost two of three after a 10-0 start. Not much went right in the loss to Vanderbilt, which began the season as a top-10 team. The Golden Eagles missed 16 of their first 17 shots and trailed 35-8 with under eight minutes left in the first half. No one had a worse night than senior forward Jae Crowder (17.2 points, 7.5 rebounds). The team’s second leading scorer missed his first seven shots and finished 4-of-13 for 16 points. Meanwhile, Darius Johnson-Odom (17.4 points, 3.4 rebounds) hit five of 15 attempts and is shooting 33 percent over the last two games. The undersized Golden Eagles missed 6-11 center Chris Otule, who has sat out the last five games with a knee injury, after big man Davante Gardner was limited to five minutes due to foul trouble against the Commodores. Despite the poor showing, Marquette is still 29th in the nation in scoring (78.5 points).

TIP INS:

1. “We were too reliant on making shots in hopes of increasing our energy.” – Williams, on the Golden Eagles abysmal first half in which they shot 21.2 percent.

2. Otule has been out since Dec. 6 and Williams said Thursday his return is “a long time from now.”

3. As of the latest NCAA statistics posted on Dec. 18, the Wildcats were the eighth-best free-throw shooting team in the nation (77.7). Click here to Place your College Basketball bets at Bovada Sportsbook

Wednesday’s best NCAAB bets: Villanova Wildcats at West Virginia Mountaineers

Seton Hall Pirates at Syracuse Orange (-15.5, N/A)

There are plenty of spots on the Big East schedule to stumble, and No. 1 Syracuse knows that list includes Seton Hall, especially after last season. The Pirates shot 59 percent from 3-point range and routed the Orange in a 90-68 at the Carrier Dome. They’ll try to repeat the performance Wednesday in the teams’ Big East opener at Syracuse.

Even though Seton Hall’s leading scorer from that game has moved on, the defeat sticks with this Syracuse team, including sophomore Dion Waiters, who said he had this game circled on his calendar. The Pirates are off to their best start since 1992-93, when they won the conference.

Senior Herb Pope is skilled enough to carry Seton Hall back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006. Pope was a member of the supporting cast in last year’s upset at Syracuse, but this season he is averaging a double-double (20.3 points, 11.4 rebounds) and put together a string of four straight 20-plus point games this month.

Pope’s board work inside could keep Seton Hall within striking distance, as the Orange rank 11th in the Big East in rebounding margin.

Pick: Pirates

Villanova Wildcats at West Virginia Mountaineers (-8, N/A)

Teams projected to finish smack in the middle of the Big East scrum square off in Morgantown, W. Va., as Villanova and West Virginia begin their conference schedule Wednesday.

The Mountaineers were picked seventh and the Wildcats eighth in the Big East preseason poll, and between them West Virginia senior Kevin Jones was the lone selection among three preseason all-league teams.

Jones was named Big East Player of the Week after averaging 23 points and 14.7 rebounds and hitting 31-of-55 shots against Tennessee Tech, Missouri State and Baylor. The senior forward averages a double-double (21 points, 11.9 rebounds), and contributed his eighth this season with 28 points and 17 boards in Friday’s 83-81 loss to Baylor in the Las Vegas Classic.

Villanova is 5-0 at home but just 1-5 in road and neutral-site games, including losses at rivals Temple and Saint Joseph’s in which the hosts broke things open in the second half to win by double digits.

Pick: West Virginia

Utah has indefinitely suspended starting point guard Josh Watkins for conduct detrimental to the team. Watkins has scored in double digits in 13 straight games, including 11 points in an 82-52 loss to Fresno State on Saturday.
